Sun Conure

Question:

Hi All, My family just purchased a Sun Conure and he is just a riot. What I would like to know, for some reason I forgot to ask the breeder, is what is the life expectancy of this bird. 30+ years…some say up to 50… We have one (and a Sennegal).  The Conure is a riot. Ours loves newspaper, taped into tube.  He crawls in the tube, and tears it up.  He’ll spend hours in that darned paper tube… — The opinions expressed in this message are my own personal views and do not reflect the official views of Microsoft Corporation.

Cool!  I’m glad you’re having such a good time with your new bird!  With the biting, I think you’re right… some birds seem nervous at first and will bite more.  (unfortunately in my house the main one who was like that was Coral, the M2, and that meant blood did flow on occassion until she settled in.)  But Willie, our sun would occassionally bite at first, too.  Now, as long as you don’t jerk your hand away he’s as gentle as can be.  A real sweetie pie.  He won’t lie on his back for long, but he loves snuggling.  Oh… he LOVES it when you blow in his face.  He opens his beak and waggles his tongue.  He will get up in your face and insist that you do it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hey Kellie; > I was prolly the one that started all the talk on the sun conure – as I was > seriously looking onto them before I made my commitment. Vicki: Thanks for your input.  I guess we’ll just let laying birds lie. We have had birds for some years and have done some reading, but didn’t realize they could take so long to mate.  Sun Conures sell for $399. US in Florida where we go every winter.  A few weeks ago I saw one in a pet store in Barrie ON. Canada for $999. Can.  ( $679. US. )  So I guess $500 Can, is conservative.     Our highly spoiled bird has its own bed room and sleeps at least 12 hrs a night.  She likes fresh squeezed orange juice ( won’t touch any other kind ) and  gets some shavings from a calcium pill and multivitamin in that.  We read that if take eggs away it induces them to lay more. So we leave them until she gets tired of them.     Thanks again to both you and Janet.  If you want know anything about sailing I’m your man. I hear you, Laurie.  When you get to be my age, look out!  These older farts seem to always looking for a money machine, don’t they?  That really has a way of putting me off and bagging the "romance"!  Could be the young ones do it now, too.   Has Pops said any more about the AG  you saw at the pet store?  That bird could bring him a heck of a lot of joy.  I hope it happens. Andee

Naw…not much more than "I’m not a bird person"  He thinks it’s totally crazy that anyone would spend that kind of money on…a bird!!!  He just doesn’t get it! Laurie

I can’t tell you how many times that someone has offered to "rent" me their bird for "stud" ! Its usually some bonehead that figures that they will be able to make a living in bird breeding just by running a stud service….of course they failed to make a million bucks selling Amway too ! And  its always some yo-yo that got fleeced buying their "stud bird"…..since when does a sun comure cost more than $125.00 in Florida ? You’d have to look for the highest-priced retail store in the state to get screwed for $400 …..I saw sun conures for $100 just two days ago in Fla. This guy has alot to learn about BUYING before  he starts SELLING….and it might help to learn something about birds too ! Doug
